"Need" (the way I'm using the word here) is about survival: we need water, food and rest. I take "Wants" to be about pleasure: I want fame and fortune, fun and health, a car that runs. But forced to examine things, I concede I could probably survive without the Wants.

This exercise is like an appendectomy: it's no fun at all, but if you shirk it, you will virtually die.

See if just one of your Wants has shifted to look like a Need. Don’t panic! We all do this naturally, but Needing makes people very unhappy, and we can de-program. Just notice it, be honest about its name.

Continue to notice Wants masquerading as Needs. Soon, you will have the choice to release the feeling that you will die if you don’t get a particular Want fulfilled. Then it will have become a manageable Want. And you'll be a wee bit happier.
