If you're a Westerner, you're probably programmed for guilt, sin, or shame in some form, no matter what religion you grew up in. No matter whether you grew up in a church or not, it pervades the culture, the quiet, nagging sense of being "not quite good enough." If you had parents that never condemned you or modeled shame, you are a fortunate and rare individual.
De-programming ourselves of such bad code is much harder and much easier than we expect. Just notice when you’re mean, unkind, or whatever, and just stick with the awareness until it works you toward change. (It will.) Do not judge the trait or beat yourself up. Just examine it closely until your honest curiosity begins to rob it of its secret power.
When you are resentful, you suffer.
Wake up. Take heed. Cut it out.
