No matter what they say, prayer really can make you a better person. But not exactly the way they taught me when as a kid in “Sunday School,” reciting some words, earning little stars by my name that proved I’d met somebody else’s expectation. As an adult, I know that praying is not about getting; it's about getting rid of.
Prayer
To Do This Week

Pray, sure, but do it in your very own private way. You might begin with an event or relationship that is concerning you because it's not unfolding as it should. Now, in God's presence, take a step back to an opposite outcome (the one you dread). See if you can imagine good consequences from the outcome you've feared. Finally, allow yourself to remain suspended in the uncertainty, feeling vulnerable or helpless between these possibilities.
This little experiment allows you to step out of your ideas in order to draw nearer to the God that's larger than your conceivings.
This can be a happier – and more restoring – version of praying. It's a technique for Letting Go, which may be crucial to most praying.
